Sparking the Hatpin Revolution

We live and work in a world where only a few are able to truly thrive. We all want to live and contribute authentically. We need to make that happen.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer, March 3, 1907

Why did we choose the name Hatpin Revolution? In the early 20th century women started arming themselves with long hatpins to protect themselves from “pestering men.” A lot of men were getting stabbed.  How do they stop women from stabbing men with hatpins? They banned women from being able to wear hatpins longer than certain lengths. This article in Smithsonian Magazine on the topic sparked a conversation with our founders.

Rather than telling people they need to “suck up” inequity while banning the way people stick up for themselves, we should change the world. So that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to empower people with the means and technologies to help all people feel safe and welcome in their world. To do this we take a human centered approach to leadership that respects all people by allowing people to be authentic in all parts of their lives.

We help leaders create environments that are psychologically safe, accessible, and engaging.

We help people learn to navigate conflict authentically through emotional intelligence, communications, and setting boundaries.

But what about the Hatpins?

While we would love for everyone to be able to solve things amicably, sometimes we need to use our verbal “hatpins” to maintain our boundaries. Our teams can help develop people and organizational defense skills when we need to get “pointy.”

Instead of needing Hatpins let’s start a Revolution

  1. This is such a powerful and much-needed initiative! I love how the “Hatpin Revolution” flips the script—empowering people instead of telling them to “suck up” inequity. The story behind the name is incredible, and your focus on human-centered leadership, psychological safety, and setting boundaries is exactly what real change looks like. Keep leading the revolution—this work matters! 🚀
